The Penguins have combined to outshoot their last two opponents 96-54 which led Mike Sullivan to say that the Penguins deserved better after their loss to the Bruins.
While the Pens are dictating play, that doesn’t mean that mistakes haven’t been made. Evgeni Malkin attempted to strip Brad Marchand of the puck on Monday, and it led directly to Torey Krug’s game tying goal in the third period.
John Marino made a great individual effort just prior to Marchand’s game winner, but shot the puck wide of the net and allowed an easy breakout.
I’m all for trying to make something happen, but Malkin and Marino needed to do a better job of understanding the game circumstance.
Geno needed to be on the right side of the puck, and Marino needed to put the puck into the crest of the goaltender.
The Penguins are nearly there. They're dictating play. They're playing a tenacious brand of hockey. Hell, Bruce Cassidy said they're the fastest team the Bruins have seen this season.
The Penguins are very close to being the team they want to be. They've got to be a little smarter in the critical moments of the game.
