I've been saying all week that the only way the Islanders beat the Penguins is if the Pens help them do it. Last night, Pittsburgh gave one away on Long Island.
The Islanders aren't a particularly gifted offensive hockey club. Their scoring is predicated on forcing turnovers and striking on the counter attack. Josh Bailey's OT goal last night is the perfect example. Kris Letang flew 1-on-3 into the Islanders zone which wound up leading to a 2-on-1 the other way. Within seconds it was in the back of the net.
The Penguins did a lot right. Phil Kessel looked like playoff Phil. Evgeni Malkin had jump all night and scored on the power play. Hell, they had 44 shots on net.
The Penguins need to play smarter. They're capable of it. Their 10-3-3 record in March and their commitment to defense during that time proves it. Here's guessing the winner of game 2 wins the series. If the Penguins don't beat themselves I think it comes back to the 'Burgh 1-1.
