Jim Rutherford is a great GM. He took a roster that had underachieved for a handful of years and supplemented it with eventual Stanley Cup Playoff heroes.
Carl Hagelin, Trevor Daley, Nick Bonino, Phil Kessel, Patric Hornqvist were all brought in and contributed. I won't take that away from GMJR.
Lately, though the acquisitions have been questionable at best. The Brassard deal, though I'd have done it, didn't work. Ryan Reaves was a disaster. Jack Johnson stinks.
It seems like Rutherford is now putting a premium on toughness. When the Penguins in 2016 won the Cup, they "just played." Now they need someone to protect the stars? Nah.
This Penguins roster isn't great. It's better than what it's shown, but it's not great. GMJR needs to turn it around. We'll have to wait until the offseason to see how it goes.
