Opening day rainout is perfect for Pirates

posted by Adam Crowley -

When I was a little tyke (Redman), I used to put my training potty on top of my head as a batting helmet. Baseball was pure. Baseball was fun.

I went to each of the first three games at PNC Park. It was the greenest grass I'd ever seen. I'll never forget it. I remember being mesmerized by Jack Wilson's range.

I remember crying tears of joy when Rob Mackowiak had the double-header of his life after the birth of his son.

I remember Craig Wilson hitting pinch hit bombs, Jason Bay winning rookie of the year, and the hope of 2003 when Reggie Sanders and Kenny Lofton hopped aboard the rally train.

I still have a Brian Giles jersey tucked somewhere in my closet like a repressed memory.

Hell, I wish I could forget some of the times after my early years of Pirates fandom. I became cynical shortly after I hit puberty.

After every Pirates season, I say to myself, "okay, next year is the year." 2013 brought some legitimate hope that we may see some playoff success out of the Bucs. But since 2013, the Pirates have won exactly zero playoff series.

We've seen under-performing stars, drug suspensions, injuries, kidnappings and cancer stand between the Pirates and success. Oh yeah, and the owner.

It's always, "next year in Jerusalem."

I've been waiting on the Pirates my whole life. So I guess it's fitting that today's game has been rained out. What's waiting one more day?
