Guidance to Resume Sports Activities in PA

The Wolf Administration provided preliminary guidance on how PA can resume high school and other summer sports.

“This is another step toward reopening our state and getting things back on track. As students and teammates get ready to train and compete, it’s important that they follow precautions to protect each other and their community from the risk of COVID-19.”

Public and private K-12 schools

Schools that are part of the PIAA and PISAA, in both yellow and green phase counties, can resume voluntary sports-related workouts. The schools must first develop an athletic health and safety plan that aligns with the Department of Education’s Preliminary Guidance for Phased Reopening of Schools. Capacity limits will be in effect, and the facility as a whole may not exceed 50% of total occupancy.

Recreational and amateur sports teams

As long as you are in a green phase, you can hold in-person activities, including games and practices. Youth sports organizations should follow CDC guidelines. Gatherings will be held to the limits of 25 in the yellow phase and 250, or 50 percent capacity, in the green phase.

Coaches and adults hosting youth sports are encouraged to wear face coverings, and all athletes should be screened for health symptoms prior to games. Social distancing should happen as much as possible.

College Sports

Associations sanctioned by the NCAA, including intramural and club sports, can resume in-person activity after developing an athletic health and safety plan aligned with Postsecondary Education Institutions and Adult Education Programs guidance.

Professional Sports

These can resume immediately. Teams or leagues in the yellow phase, or if more than 250 people are on-site in the green phase, must have a COVID-19 safety plan approved by the PA DOH.
