Steelers missed the boat on a veteran backup RB

When it was known that Le'Veon Bell wasn't going report in 2018, the Steelers should have signed a veteran backup.

Jaylen Samuels has proven himself to be a capable pass catcher. He scored a TD in the Panthers and Chargers games. As a runner though, I've got my doubts. Samuels is averaging 2.6 yards per carry behind what is widely considered one of the best offensive lines in football.

Stevan Ridley is averaging 3.1 yards per carry, and really hasn't been a productive back since 2013.

While the free agent crop of backs wasn't inspiring, I'd have liked the Steelers to have picked one up as an extra insurance option.

C.J. Anderson is reportedly going to be signed by the Raiders. He had 1,000 yards last year, and has averaged 4.4 ypc in his career. He'd have been a good pickup and was waived the day before the Le'Veon Bell November 13th deadline.

I expect Ridley to play better with a higher volume of touches, but I think the Steelers missed the boat in not adding another option when Bell's intentions were clear.
