Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez, 27 years old, has committed suicide in prison.

In a statement, the Massachusetts Department of Corrections says says Hernandez, "hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window."  It says he also tried to block his door from the inside by jamming it with several items.  Hernandez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 4 a.m. ET.

Hernandez was serving life in prison for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd.  Last week, he was acquitted of fatally shooting two men outside a Boston nightclub in 2012.

The former University of Florida began his NFL career as a fourth round draft pick with the Patriots in 2010.  Hernandez took the Patriots to Super Bowl XLVI  and scored a touchdown during the game. The Patriots lost to the Giants 21-17.

He has a four-year-old daughter Avielle Janelle Jenkins-Hernandez.  The Patriots are visiting the White House today in honor of their Super Bowl LI victory.
